PDF files
PDF stands for 'Portable Document Format'. This is a widely used format which has some very attractive attributes:
- The Adobe Acrobat reader required to read PDF files is distributed free of charge. It is easy to download from
the Adobe site and is
often part of the standard installation on new computers.
- The appearance of your file is maintained whichever computer is used to view it (unlike HTML files whose interpretation
is determined by your browser).
- The appearance of your file is maintained when it's printed out so the printed document should be identical
to your original.
- The contents of your file are safeguarded. It is not possible to open and edit the file - although, of course, anything that can be read by a human can ultimately be cracked with enough determination.
PDF files are therefore ideal if you are presenting long documents or those that include lots of diagrams or important layout. We can convert Microsoft Word documents to PDF for a single low price per document.
Links to PDF files look exactly the same as normal HTML links but it is customary to indicate that they are PDF. Typical links might therefore appear as indicated below
